On 9 March 1966, H. Peter Jost (†2016) presented the landmark report “Lubrication (Tribology), Education and Research” in the British Parliament. This report is widely regarded as the starting point of modern tribology and marked the beginning of a field that has since become essential for modern engineering and industry.

Over the past six decades, tribology – the science and technology of friction, wear, and lubrication – has become a key driver of efficiency, sustainability, and reliability in engineering and industrial applications worldwide.

Ten years ago, the 50th anniversary of tribology was celebrated with a prestigious symposium held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in London. The event brought together renowned experts and researchers from academia and industry to reflect on the achievements and future challenges of the field.

During the symposium, H. Peter Jost, then President of the International Tribology Council and widely regarded as the founder of modern tribology, emphasized the crucial importance of integrating tribological knowledge into industrial development and innovation.

The event also highlighted tribological research activities in Austria, including the work carried out at the COMET Excellence Center for Tribology – AC2T research GmbH.

The celebrations concluded with a memorable reception at Buckingham Palace, personally organized by Prof. Jost.

As tribology celebrates its 60th anniversary, the field continues to play a vital role in advancing technologies that improve energy efficiency, reduce wear and material losses, and support sustainable engineering solutions for the future.
